In Genesis, God establishes the covenant of Mercy over Judgment by gifting the earth the rain-bow after the flood. The bow, in ancient times, was an instrument of war. This is a foreshadowing of the better covenant- where a symbol of destruction (The cross) is transformed into a symbol of mercy. This is why the bow is positioned in heaven instead of the earth, because in this way- the direction of Gods wrath is towards Jesus instead of mankind, so that we would live through mercy instead.

“In wrath remember mercy.”- Habakkuk 3:2

The rainbow is a reflection of God’s will and his glory as it projects itself onto earth as it appears in heaven. In the book of revelation we find many references to the rainbow being visible in the throne room and heavenly hosts.

“And he who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian, and around the throne was a rainbow that had the appearance of an emerald.” - Rev. 4:3

“Then I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven, wrapped in a cloud, with a rainbow over his head…” - Rev 10:1

The rainbows presence in the book of the Bible that reveals God’s judgement, is a continuous reminder that his mercy to his bride still stands. The wrath that will be poured out at the end of the age is not for the church. This is often a source of fear for many believers as they fear that God will somehow forget them during the end times, but it is very much in God’s nature to remind us of his promises and reveal his mercy in the most unexpected ways.
